DOCTORAL PROGRAMME
„METHODS AND TECHNIQUE OF GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH“

ANNOTATION

The scientific doctoral programme in Methods and Technique of Geological Research is aimed at preparing highly qualified specialists in the field of structural geological and geophysical studies related to the prospecting, exploration and mining of mineral deposits.

Unlike programmes related to fundamental geophysical and geological issues, the efforts at the UMG “St. Ivan Rilski” are aimed at the solution of tasks directly linked to the implementation of state and/or business projects. The training of the PhD students is mostly focused on the practical aspect. Special attention is paid to the surface geophysical research in the industrial, civic and mining construction and the setting up of geographical databases when managing geological and exploration projects and the contemporary administration of natural parks and geoparks.

The PhD students obtain the necessary theoretical and practical training which increases their knowledge in the area of field, borehole and remote sensing geophysical methods and geological techniques in all stages of prospecting, exploration, mining and processing of mineral resources as well as the solution of engineering and geological, hydrogeological and ecological assignments. They are trained in using contemporary professional geological and geophysical software.

The PhD graduates in Methods and Technique of Geological Research at the Applied Geophysics Department and the Geology and Geoinformatics Department can find occupational fulfilment in the design and conducting of geophysical, geological, geochemical and geo-administrative tasks and studies in the above-mentioned areas as well as spheres related to them. They can work in design, research and engineering organisations, companies and state institutions with a wide area of activity both in the country, in Europe and across the world.

The acquired knowledge and skill give the PhD graduates the possibility to work as managers or experts in state and public institutions as well as lecturers or researchers in universities. They can also find occupational fulfilment in the area of modern computer technologies.
