ANNOTATION

The doctoral programme in Hydrogeology at the Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology Department aims to prepare highly qualified specialists in the area of exploration, utilisation, protection and management of ground water resources.

The scientific research of the PhD students is targeted at applied issues related to evaluation and effective use of fresh and mineral ground waters; technogenic pollution and protection of the ground waters and soils; intrusion of saline sea waters in the coastal aquifers; drainage of big mining sites and engineering facilities in complex hydrogeological conditions; exploration and production of geothermal energy; geotechnological mining of minerals; mathematical modelling of filtration, migration and heat processes in water-saturated and under-saturated environment; climate change impact on ground waters.

During the course of study the PhD students study and take exams in a foreign language and basic disciplines such as Statistical Methods and Programmes for Database Creation, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Methods and Computer Programmes for Solving Hydrogeological Problems. Optionally, some of the basic disciplines can be replaced by others, closely related to the subject of dissertation.

The PhD graduates in Hydrogeology can find their occupational fulfilment not only in the narrow framework of hydrogeology, but also in the area of water supply, exploration and mining of minerals and earth heat, energy, construction, ecology, etc. They can hold managerial and expert positions in Bulgarian and foreign design and engineering companies, scientific and research institutes, public organisations and state structures. The acquired scientific and educational degree gives them the right to be managers and/or key experts in national or international scientific projects, as well as to occupy academic positions at universities.
