Second edition of DIM ESEE-2 innovative workshop under the topic Innovation in process-oriented orebody characterization was held successfully from 19th to 21st October 2022 at the Inter-University Center in Dubrovnik, in hybrid form. The event gathered 22 on-site participants and 16 online participants connected via b2match interactive platform. Among the participants, there were PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers employed at universities or in industry, engineers from various companies and academicians, representing 21 different institutions from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Slovenia, Sweden and Ukraine. The workshop was sponsored by Bruker Nano Analytics and was held under high patronage of Croatian Ministry of Science and Education as well as Ministry of Economy and Sustainable development.

The aim of the workshop was to present the most recent technological innovations which contribute to a better understanding of a mineral resource from in situ and online measurements, down to microanalytical techniques for automated mineralogy, as well as to introduce principles of geometallurgy and show how process-oriented ore characterization allows to predict process performance and its environmental impact. The course was divided into three days, organized by University of Liège, with 12 lecturers representing various institutions and companies such as Belgian Geological Survey, Geological Survey of Finland, DMT, Geopyörä, Metheore, Carl Zeiss Microscopy, Bruker, Metso Outotec, Minviro…

The first day, Wednesday 19th October, was titled Sensing and modelling the ore deposit. The programme started with an Opening ceremony including speeches by Agata Poczmańska (Education Manager at EIT Raw Materials Eastern CLC, Project officer), Assoc. Prof. Vječislav Bohanek, PhD (Program director, Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, University of Zagreb) and Prof. Sibila Borojević Šoštarić, PhD – Project coordinator (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering). The introductory lecture about Digital twin perspective – From ore to metal was given by Prof. Eric Pirard (University of Liège) followed by Introduction to process-oriented orebody characterization, given by Dr. Alan R Butcher (Geological Survey of Finland) and Advanced rock imaging principles by Milkias Semereab (University of Liège). Prof. Eric Pirard also talked about principles of geological imaging and online vision. Three lecturers gave their lessons online – Carlos Garcia Piña from DMT presented The Acorelog – advanced core logging system, Dr. Marcos de Paiva Bueno from Geopyörä presented the techniques of rock breakage characterisation testing. while Arpit Singh Parmar from Metheore demonstrated LaserSieve – Online sizing of agregates and comminuted material.

On the second day, Thursday 20th October, we started Tracking fine particles and minerals. Once again, Prof. Eric Pirard opened the day with the lecture on spatial sampling and stereology, followed by Sample preparation for quantitative mineralogy presented online by Dr. Hassan Bouzahzah, also from University of Liège. At the lecture room, Dr Rich Taylor from Carl Zeiss Microscopy introduced SEM and CT based Automated Mineralogy, and after the lunch break, live lectures continued with Dr. Andrew Menzies from Bruker, presenting MicroXRF for Mineralogical Mapping, and Christian Burlet (Belgian Geological Survey) presenting MicroLIBS for Elemental Mapping. Afterwards, Prof. Eric Pirard and Dr. Bouzahzah gave overview of Mineralogical reconciliation of ore sample analyses with case studies, and the second day closed with two technical demos by Bruker and Zeiss Mineralogic. Before dinner, participants went for a sightseeing tour in Dubrovnik centre.

Finally, Day 3 and topic Process simulations and lifecycle assessment, on Friday, 21st October. Main presenter was Dr. Jussi Liipo from the company Metso Outotec, Finland, with topic Minerals and Process Simulation and live introduction to HSC software. Online, we had Dr. Sandra Belboom from HELMo – Haute Ecole Libre Mosane, introducing LCA for mineral processing operations and Dr. Robert Pell from Minviro presenting Application of Lifecycle Analysis to the Mining Industry. The workshop was successfully closed with the final recap presentation by Prof. Borojević Šoštarić, inviting all participants to next year’s editions.
